The After School Special (ASS) Gravel ride will take place on 14 November 2020. Registration is $20 and 100% of that will go to the ACLU legal relief fund. If you cannot afford registration send an email to pratt.max@gmail.com and we will donate $20 for you. This 50 mile ride starts near Western Coventry Elementary School in Coventry, RI and loops north around the Burlingame Reservoir in Chepachet before heading back south.

We are planning a rolling start time between 9am and 10am. All participants must wear face masks at the start and carry them on the ride should they need to stop for assistance. Riders may only pace together within their pod. Defer to the Rhode Island COVID portal for all other information. Anyone who refuses to comply will be subject to fines and legal action from the Rhode Island DOH.

We have placed navigation indicators on course to help direct riders, but all participants are responsible for their own way-finding. We recommend downloading the course onto a riding computer or phone. There is NO BAIL OUT. Otherwise, print out the cue sheet from the route page and carry it in your back pocket. Cell service is patchy in the more remote parts of the course.

FAQs

What should I bring?

Bring a mask, snacks, water, and tools. We will have a no-contact rest stop at the mid-point, but beyond that, you’re on your own. Bring supplied to tighten bolts, fix flats, and handle a broken chain.

How long will it take?

Plan to be out for a day. Not all unpaved sections are smooth. There’s a mix of dirt roads, ATV trails, and singletrack, some of which are fairly rugged. The fast time for this course is expected to be around the 3 hour mark.

What bike is this suited for?

While possible on a road bike, we suggest running something with at least 33mm tires. Some tread is helpful for the sandy and loose sections, but it’ll be a long day, so ride something you’re comfortable on.

What are your COVID-19 precautions?

Riders may only pace with members of their pod. Masks must be worn when at the start, rest-stop, and finish. If you have been in contact with someone suspected of having COVID, get tested and only participate if your test is negative. Stay home if you are feeling ill. Defer to the Rhode Island COVID portal for all other information.

What’s this about obstacles?

An early unpaved section of the course will have some cyclocross obstacles for riders to navigate. These are optional, but they are photo-op for those who are enthusiastic about barriers.

What if I get injured or break my bike on course?

If you are unable to complete the course due to an accident, contact the organizers and we will help you out. Be aware, some sections of the ride are more remote than others and extraction may be difficult. Always ride within your limits and be aware of other vehicles and riders on the road. This is not a closed course and all standard right-of-way and common sense rules apply.
